High elevation lakes, also known as high mountain or alpine lakes, are numerous throughout the western United States and Idaho. They are often located in remote, hard to reach locations and have unique characteristics and ecosystems because of the harsh alpine climates in which they are situated. They offer unique opportunities to experience relatively untouched scenery and natural beauty while hiking, backpacking or fishing. Today, the impacts of fish stocking on the native ecosystems of high mountain lakes in the Salmon River Basin are ever more apparent. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game plays a crucial role in balancing the needs of native fauna and the desires of recreational anglers to provide important habitat while still providing opportunities for fishing. Management policies are constantly evaluated and changed as new science emerges from within the IDFG and beyond.
