The River

I'm in love! In love with The River! It is a powerful being, capable of both gently nudging and forcefully pushing its way through the landscape, creating and destroying habitats for us terrestrial beings. It brings cobbles, sediment and woody debris to form an island or simply cuts one out, tearing it away from the floodplain.

Humans depend on the life the river brings. This leaves us vulnerable and with a desire to control the river with dams, levees and canals. The river humors us and follows our direction for some time until one day it breaks free again and we call it a catastrophe.

Although deeply grateful to the river for water to drink and the food it provides, it's the wild and free river I love. The one with the power to create and destroy. The one who still gently rocks me back and forth as I fall asleep in my tent at night.
